Work has been suspended on Costa Rica’s new national stadium, set to be built on the site of the old La Sabana park.

Despite being entirely funded by the Chinese, the proposed 40,000 seater development has come under criticism for its environmental impact on the surrounding area. This week the Sala Constitucional de Costa Rica has ordered a halt to works until a final appeal is heard.

The Court order follows a “recurso de amparo” by the former ministro de Cultura, Guido Sáenz, and a group of citizens, against the Instituto Costarricense del Deporte (ICODER).
Sáenz argued that the new stadium with a capacity of 40.000, double that of the demolished stadium, would be detrimental to the environment and affect the enjoyment of citizens of the Parque Metropolitano de la Sabana, which according to Sáenz, is considered the “pulmón” (lung) of the capital.
The Court order suspending construction is to be maintained until the court delivers a final appeal by the former minister of Culture.
The new stadium project, with a cost of us$72 million dollars, was announced shortly after Costa Rica dropped a 63 year relationship with Taiwan to begin relations with China, in June 2007.
