Zephyr Field is home to the New Orleans Zephyrs, the AAA affiliate of the New York Mets major league baseball team. Opened in 1997 in Metairie (Jefferson Parish), a suburb of New Orleans, the stadium seats 11,000 fans. Previous to this, the Zephyrs played at Privateer Park on the campus of the University of New Orleans. On September 3, 2005, FEMA director Mike Brown announced that, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Zephyr Field would be used as a military hospital.
The park frequently hosts Tulane University games. The Green Wave plays their three annual games against cross-town rival University of New Orleans at the stadium, as well as home games against archrival LSU. Since 2006, Zephyr Field has been the primary home of the Green Wave, as Tulane’s on-campus facility, Turchin Stadium has been undergoing renovations. The renovations were scheduled to be completed in time for the 2006 season, but Hurricane Katrina significantly damaged Turchin Stadium, forcing the renovation project to start over.
