The 1920 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the VII Olympiad, were held in 1920 in Antwerp, Belgium. Budapest initially won to host the games but as Hungary had been a German ally in the First World War, it lost the right to host the Games or even to participate, along with other allies Germany, Austria, Bulgaria and Turkey. Antwerp was chosen instead, in April 1919, to memorialize Belgium for its suffering in World War I.
